Abraham's sacrifice to God
Genesis 22
1. It happened, after these things, that God tested Abraham, saying to him: Abraham! And he replied: Here I am.
2. God went on: Take your son now; your only son, Isaac, whom you love; go to the land of Moriah, and offer it there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains that I will show you.
3. So Abraham got up early in the morning, saddled his donkey, and took two of his boys and Isaac his son with him; and, having cut wood for the burnt offering, he left to go to the place which God had told him.
4. On the third day Abraham looked up and saw the place from afar.
5. And Abraham said to his young men, Stay here with the donkey, and the young man and I will go there; after we worship, we will return to you.
6. So Abraham took the wood for the burnt offering and put it on Isaac his son; he also took fire and the cleaver in his hand, and they walked together.
7. Then Isaac said to his father Abraham, My father! Abraham replied: Here I am, my son! Isaac asked him, "Behold, fire and wood, but where is the lamb for the burnt offering?"
8. Abraham replied: God will provide for you the lamb for the burnt offering, my son. And the two were walking together.
9. When they had reached the place which God had told him, Abraham built the altar there and set the wood in order; he bound him, Isaac his son, and laid him on the altar on top of the wood.
10. And reaching out, he took the cleaver to kill his son.
11. But the angel of the Lord called out to him from heaven, and said, Abraham, Abraham! He replied: Here I am.
12. Then the angel said, Do not extend your hand over the young man, and do nothing to him; for now I know that you fear God, since you have not withheld your son from me, your only son.
13. At that Abraham lifted his eyes and looked, and behold, a ram entangled by the horns in the bush was behind him; and Abraham went and took the ram and offered it as a burnt offering instead of his son.
14. So Abraham called that place Jehovah-Jireh; whence it is said to this day: On the mountain of the Lord it will be provided.
15. Then the angel of the Lord called to Abraham a second time from heaven,
16. and said, I have sworn by myself, says the Lord, because you have done this, and you have not withheld your son, your only son,
17. that I will indeed bless you, and greatly multiply your offspring, like the stars in the sky and like the sand on the shore of the sea; and your offspring will possess the door of their enemies;
18. and in your seed all the nations of the earth will be blessed; because you have obeyed my voice.
19. Then Abraham returned to his young men, and they got up and went to Beer-sheba together; and Abraham lived in Beer-Seba.
